The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Revenue Service in collaboration with the Joint Revenue Board, has announced the rollout of a new unified Taxpayer Identification system designed to strengthen tax administration and boost transparency across the country.
The announcement was made via a public notice issued in Abuja on May 18, 2026.
The initiative is backed by Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which requires every taxable individual in the country to obtain a Tax ID.
The new system is intended to serve as a single, standardised identity for all taxpayers, allowing for smoother interaction with tax authorities at both federal and state levels.
Among its key benefits, the system is expected to consolidate taxpayer records, eliminate duplication, reduce tax leakages, and harmonise data across all tiers of government. It is also designed to simplify the processes of tax registration, filing, and payment while improving overall accountability within the tax system.
As part of the transition from the existing framework, all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, as well as financial institutions and other organisations currently using the TIN Validation API, have been notified that the new Tax ID system will replace it.
Organisations that require integration or validation services for individuals, enterprises, and business names have been directed to reach out to the Standardisation and Modernisation Department of the Joint Revenue Board.
Corporate bodies seeking integration support, on the other hand, have been advised to contact the Tax Automation Department of the Nigeria Revenue Service for access to the Tax ID API and relevant guidelines.
