Police arrest two in Kogi, recover wraps of Indian hemp in vehicle
The Kogi State Police Command has arrested two suspects and recovered 339 wraps of suspected Indian hemp concealed in a vehicle during a routine stop-and-search operation in the state.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, disclosed this during a press briefing on Tuesday.
He said the operation was carried out on May 9, 2026, at about 2 pm by operatives of the Kabba Area Command during routine highway checks.
According to him, officers stopped a Honda Pilot Jeep with registration number LSD 456 GE and discovered the illicit substance after a search of the vehicle.
The vehicle was driven by Chris Amos, 52, with Bilat Joseph as a passenger. Both were immediately taken into custody for questioning.
Kankarofi said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly collected the consignment from Ado-Ekiti in Ekiti State on the instruction of an unidentified individual known only as “Alhaji.”
He added that the drugs were reportedly being transported to Yola in Adamawa State before the interception.
The police commissioner said the suspects are currently assisting investigators, while the seized substances have been secured as exhibits.
Kankarofi warned that drug trafficking remains a major driver of crime and insecurity, stressing that the command would intensify efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating within and across the state.
“Illicit drug trafficking remains one of the major factors fuelling violent crimes in society. The command will continue to sustain aggressive operations targeted at dismantling criminal syndicates and preventing the movement of illicit substances through the state,” he said.
He also appreciated the Inspector-General of Police for his support, the Kogi State Government for its cooperation, and residents for providing useful intelligence that aided police operations.
