Barcelona reject Rashford buy option, eye fresh talks

Barcelona will not activate the €30 million buyout clause in Marcus Rashford’s loan agreement, paving the way for the forward’s return to Manchester United.

The clause is due to expire on June 15, but the Spanish champions have decided against making the deal permanent despite Rashford’s impressive performances during his spell at the club.

The England international enjoyed a productive campaign under Hansi Flick, contributing 14 goals and 14 assists as Barcelona won the La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup.

However, the Catalan club have opted not to proceed with the pre-agreed transfer as they continue to focus on financial sustainability and wider squad restructuring plans.

Barcelona’s transfer priorities reportedly shifted after securing a €70 million move for Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United.

The decision means Rashford is formally expected to return to Manchester United following the expiration of his loan deal.

Ahead of England’s participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 28-year-old has reportedly removed references to Barcelona from his social media profiles as preparations begin for his return to Carrington.

Despite declining the buyout option, Barcelona have not completely ruled out bringing Rashford back.

Sporting director Deco is said to favour fresh negotiations that could involve another season-long loan arrangement, potentially including a conditional obligation to buy at a later date.

The club could also seek to negotiate a lower transfer fee than the original €30 million clause.

Manchester United, however, are understood to prefer a permanent sale.

With Rashford entering the final year of his contract and having rebuilt his reputation during his time in Spain, United are believed to be confident of attracting interest from other clubs willing to meet their valuation.

While the existing buy option will lapse, discussions between both clubs could resume later in the transfer window if circumstances change.
