Democracy Day: Ikpea Pays Tribute To Pro-Democracy Activists, Calls For Unity

The senator representing Edo Central Senatorial District, Sen. Joseph Ikpea, has called for peace, unity and patriotism as Nigeria marks 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule.
The federal lawmaker said this in a statement on Thursday, urging Nigerians to support the Federal Government and state governments in tackling insecurity, as security should be everyone’s responsibility.
Sen. Ikpea appealed to residents of Edo Central to complement government efforts aimed at protecting lives and property.
The senator also paid tribute to the late MKO Abiola and other pro-democracy activists who sacrificed for the nation’s democratic journey.
He said there was a need to consolidate on the people-oriented programmes of Monday Okpebholo ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ikpea paid tribute to the late MKO Abiola, whose victory in the June 12, 1993 presidential election was annulled, leading to his incarceration and eventual death in detention.
He also honoured the sacrifices of the late Kudirat Abiola and other democracy activists who fought for the nation’s return to civilian rule.
“Today is a day that we cannot joke with in the democratic history of Nigeria. We must work together to sustain the democracy that people like Chief MKO Abiola, his late wife Kudirat, and several others died for. Many others were incapacitated for life in the struggle.
“Nigeria is going through trying times in the area of security, but it is obvious that the Federal Government and the Edo State Government under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo are doing so much to check insecurity. These efforts should be supported by all of us,” he said.
