Donald Trump savaged by Italy's PM over 'senseless attacks' against her as feud erupts

Donald Trump has come under furious attack from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who has branding the President’s repeated broadsides against her as “unprovoked” and “senseless”. The outburst is the latest in an escalating feud between two of the West’s most prominent right-wing leaders.

She wrote: “President Trump, these constant, unprovoked attacks are senseless.

“As for my popularity, being your friend certainly has not helped it, nor does it depend on my relationship with you.

“‘My popularity depends on my ability to defend Italy’s national interest, and that is exactly what I have always done.”

Ms Meloni then addressed Trump’s anger over Italy’s role in the campaign against Iran, after complaining on Saturday her country “wouldn’t even let us use landing strips or runways, a great logistical inconvenience”.

She continued: “Their use are governed agreements that we have always respected, and that cannot be violated as long as I am Prime Minister. Italy remains a sovereign nation.”

In a final furious swipe at Mr Trump, Italy’s PM told him her polling was none of his business.

She concluded: “In any case, my popularity is none of your concern. I suggest you focus on yours.”
