Personnel of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Immigration Service have clashed in a physical confrontation at the Wa Magazine checkpoint in the Upper West Region on Sunday morning, after an immigration officer allegedly directed a deeply offensive insult at a police officer’s mother over an undisclosed dispute between the two agencies.
A video of the incident shows Police Officers in blue camouflage uniforms and immigration officers in green military-style camouflage engaged in a tense standoff on a dusty red road, with the confrontation escalating into a physical altercation in full public view.
Civilian bystanders, including individuals wearing press credentials, were visible at the scene as the two groups of uniformed security personnel squared off against each other.
The precise nature of the underlying dispute that triggered the altercation had not been officially confirmed at the time of publication.
However, sources indicate that the immediate catalyst was an immigration officer allegedly making a derogatory remark about the mother of a police officer, which escalated an existing disagreement into open conflict.
Both the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Immigration Service fall under the Ministry of Interior. A clash between personnel of the two agencies at a shared checkpoint represents a significant breakdown in inter-agency relations and raises concerns about professionalism and conduct among uniformed security services.
