The Federal Government has deployed 40 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, seven electric buses and more than 200 CNG-powered tricycles in Kano State as part of its efforts to promote cleaner, cheaper and more sustainable transportation across the country.

The Executive Chairman of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), Ismaeel Ahmed, disclosed this in a statement shared on his Facebook page on Sunday to mark his first year in office.

According to Ahmed, the deployment forms part of the Federal Government’s strategy to expand the use of alternative energy in Nigeria’s transport sector.

“We proudly launched the Northern Corridor of CNG & EV with the deployment of 40 CNG buses, seven electric buses and over 200 CNG-powered tricycles in Kano,” he said.

He added that the initiative had also overseen the commissioning of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquefied Compressed Natural Gas (LCNG) stations in Kano, Katsina, Gombe, Kaduna, Owerri and other cities to improve access to cleaner fuel.

Ahmed said the programme had recorded significant progress nationwide, including an increase in the number of CNG-converted vehicles, the launch of the 100,000 Conversion Kit Programme and the introduction of the “Convert Now, Pay Small Small” financing scheme aimed at making vehicle conversion more affordable.

Looking ahead, he said the initiative would focus on expanding CNG and electric vehicle infrastructure, increasing refuelling and charging networks, deploying more mass transit vehicles and attracting greater private sector investment.

The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative is one of the Federal Government’s key programmes designed to reduce transportation costs, lower carbon emissions and encourage the adoption of cleaner energy alternatives across Nigeria.
