Resident doctors extend strike ultimatum by four weeks

Resident doctors in Nigeria have extended their strike ultimatum by an additional four weeks, raising fresh concerns over the possibility of a nationwide industrial action in the health sector.
The extension follows ongoing engagements between the doctors and relevant government authorities, as unresolved issues affecting welfare, working conditions, and remuneration persist.
The doctors had earlier issued an ultimatum to press home their demands, including improved funding for healthcare institutions, timely payment of salaries and allowances, and better working conditions.
Despite efforts to address the concerns, the association said progress has been insufficient, necessitating the extension to allow for further dialogue and resolution.
The development has heightened anxiety among patients and stakeholders, who fear that a prolonged dispute could disrupt healthcare services across the country.
The doctors urged the government to act swiftly to meet their demands and avert a full-scale strike, emphasising the need to prioritise the welfare of health workers and the overall stability of the healthcare system.
