Government cannot fight insecurity alone – Obasa tells Nigerians 

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has declared that government alone cannot fight insecurity in the country.
Obasa, who spoke on Wednesday, called on Nigerians to support the government in its bid to tackle insecurity in the country.

He made the declaration during the 17th Annual Hijrah Lecture and Du’a held at the Assembly Complex, with the theme: “Sacred Covenant of Citizenship: Islam, Security and Our Duty to the Nigerian State.”

Speaking at the event, Obasa acknowledged that one of the major challenges facing the country is insecurity.

He said that education, religious obligations, healthcare and other social structures in society can only thrive when there is adequate security for lives and property.

Addressing the gathering, Obasa enjoined Nigerians to see citizenship as a sacred covenant that requires active participation in building peace, unity and security across the country.

He specifically emphasised that insecurity is not solely the responsibility of the government.

He then used the occasion to appeal to citizens to collaborate with the government to tackle insecurity.

Obasa said, “Security is one of the greatest blessings of Allah. Without it, worship is disrupted, commerce collapses, and education suffers. But security is not the government’s duty alone. It is a shared responsibility. Citizens must report crimes, resist corruption and promote justice.

“Leaders must govern with fairness, transparency and compassion. Together, we form the covenant of citizenship.”

One of the guest speakers at the event, Air Commodore (Imam) Lukman Abiodun Lawal, aligned with Obasa’s stance.

He added that government alone cannot solve the problem of insecurity.

He urged human rights activists to carry out their activities with wisdom.

Lawal, while speaking further, used the opportunity to call on media organisations to improve their reportage by avoiding sensationalism that plays into the hands of criminals.
