Iran has launched missiles and drones at United States military targets in the region, marking a significant escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the operation in a statement posted on its Telegram channel early Wednesday, describing it as a response to recent American military actions against Iranian targets.

The latest exchange follows reports that a US Army helicopter went down near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes. While US authorities have not publicly confirmed the cause of the incident, Washington subsequently carried out retaliatory strikes against Iranian positions, accusing Tehran of involvement in the attack.

In response, Iran launched a wave of missiles and drones toward American assets in the region, raising fears of a broader military confrontation in the Middle East.

Explosions were reported in the Iranian cities of Sirik and Minab, as well as on Qeshm Island, according to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency.

However, officials later clarified reports suggesting that Minab itself had come under attack. The governor of Minab said no direct strike on the city had been recorded.

According to Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency, the sounds of explosions heard by residents originated from coastal areas along the Strait of Hormuz rather than from Minab County.

The latest developments come amid already heightened tensions between Iran, the United States and Israel. In recent days, regional stability has been threatened by renewed military exchanges involving Iran and Israel despite ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at preserving a fragile ceasefire.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical flashpoint in the crisis. The narrow waterway handles a significant portion of global oil exports, and any disruption to shipping through the strait could have major consequences for international energy markets and global trade.

Analysts warn that further military escalation could undermine ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran and increase the risk of a wider regional conflict involving multiple countries and armed groups across the Middle East.

As of Wednesday, neither the United States nor Iran had released comprehensive details regarding casualties or the extent of damage resulting from the latest attacks.
