Migrant named after stabbing border officer to death through fence

A migrant has been named as the suspect who allegedly stabbed to death a 21-year-old Polish soldier guarding the country’s border. Polish prosecutors have named Moroccan national Mohamed Addamrou in the case of the 2024 murder of the trooper who was guarding the land border between Poland and neighbouring Belarus.
Addamrou is said to have been part of a group of migrants who tried to force their way into Poland before he fatally stabbed Mateusz Sitek through a gap in the fence. It’s reported Addamrou remains in Belarus but so far authorities there have refused to extradite him for proceedings in Poland.
Private Sitek’s death sparked outrage in Poland and prompted the government to increase border security and make it easier for border patrol officers to use their firearms against migrants.
Notes from Poland reports, Private Sitek tragically died in hospital a week after he was stabbed. It’s reported Polish authorities have interviewed more than 140 witnesses both locally and internationally, as well as gathering forensic evidence.
If Addamrou is brought to Poland he will face a charge of murdering a public official which carries a whole-life sentence.
The Moroccan is subject to a European arrest warrant and Poland officially applied to Belarus for his extradition in December.
Poland and Belarus, a country allied with Vladimir Putin’s Russia, share a 248-mile-long heavily forested land border which previously provided a relative easy access route for migrants wanting to enter the EU.
However, after accusations both Belarus and Russia were weaponising migrant movements to destablise Europe, the Polish have heavily fortified the area in recent years building a Trump-style large metal barrier along the route.
