NANS mobilises North-East students for protest over abduction of 42 Borno students

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), North-East Zone (Zone E), has directed all its structures across the region to embark on a peaceful solidarity demonstration following the abduction of 42 students from Government Day Secondary School, Mussa, in Askira Uba local government council of Borno state.

The directive was contained in a press statement issued on Wednesday by the Zonal Coordinator of NANS Zone E, Muazu Hina, who announced that the demonstrations would be held simultaneously across the six states of the North-East from June 5 to June 7, 2026.

The planned protest will take place in Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa and Taraba states, with students expected to gather peacefully to demand urgent action on the fate of the abducted students.

According to Hina, the demonstration is intended to draw national attention to the plight of the missing students, express solidarity with their families, and press the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts toward their safe rescue.

“We also urge the Federal Government to strengthen security measures in all educational institutions across the country to safeguard students and ensure that schools remain safe environments for learning,” the statement read.

The NANS coordinator further directed all zonal and campus structures, including Joint Campus Committee, JCC, leadership, Students’ Union Government, SUG, executives, delegates and stakeholders, to mobilise responsibly and ensure that the demonstrations remain peaceful and lawful.

The abduction has once again raised concerns over the security of schools in Nigeria’s North-East, a region that has witnessed repeated attacks on educational institutions over the years.

Stakeholders have continued to call for stronger protective measures to prevent future incidents and guarantee uninterrupted access to education.

As preparations for the solidarity protests gather momentum, students across the region, according to the association, are expected to use the platform to advocate the safe return of the abducted students and renewed commitment to securing schools nationwide.
