Nigeria, Russia Renew Commitment to Stronger Bilateral Ties as Ambassador Iji Begins Diplomatic Mission

Nigeria and Russia have pledged to deepen their longstanding relationship following the presentation of credentials by Nigeria’s newly appointed Ambassador to the Russian Federation, Joseph Olusola Iji.

Ambassador Iji on Thursday formally presented copies of his credentials to Russia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, G.E. Borisenko, during a meeting in Moscow, officially marking the start of his diplomatic assignment in the country.

The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to review the state of relations between Abuja and Moscow and discuss ways of expanding cooperation across several sectors.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, discussions focused on strengthening the traditionally cordial ties between the two countries through enhanced political engagement and broader collaboration in areas of mutual interest.

Both officials emphasized the need to intensify political dialogue while exploring opportunities to deepen cooperation in trade and investment, science and technology, humanitarian initiatives, and other strategic fields.

The talks also reflected a shared desire to build on existing partnerships and create new avenues for cooperation that would deliver mutual benefits to both nations.

Nigeria and Russia have enjoyed decades of diplomatic relations, with collaboration extending to sectors such as education, energy, agriculture, security, and technological development.

Analysts believe Ambassador Iji’s appointment comes at a time when both countries are seeking to broaden economic and diplomatic engagement amid shifting global realities.

The meeting is a renewed commitment by Abuja and Moscow to strengthen bilateral relations and advance cooperation in key sectors critical to their development agendas.
