NSCDC appoints new commandant in Rivers

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has appointed Commandant Reuben Lessor Dennis as the new head of its Rivers State Command.

Dennis officially took over from outgoing Commandant Joachin Okafor during a handing and taking-over ceremony held at the command headquarters along Olu Obasanjo Road in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

According to a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Ihemnacho Umeado, the outgoing commandant symbolically transferred the seal of authority to Dennis, who previously served as the second-in-command of the Rivers Command and most recently as Head of Operations, Zone 9, Port Harcourt.

In his farewell speech, Okafor thanked the NSCDC Commandant-General, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, for the opportunity to serve the corps and the country.

The statement said: “The former State Commandant, also thanked the Executive Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Sir Siminalaye Fubara, for the enormous support, particularly the donation of 10 Hilux patrol vans, which literally enhanced the operational capabilities of the command.”

After highlighting achievements recorded during his tenure, Okafor urged his successor to prioritise the acquisition of a permanent site for the command.

In his remarks, Dennis pledged to sustain the achievements of his predecessor and strengthen collaboration with other security agencies operating in the state.

He also promised to work closely with stakeholders to improve security across Rivers State.

The new commandant said he would intensify efforts to protect critical national assets and infrastructure, warning that the command would deal decisively with acts of economic sabotage and vandalism.

Dennis further pledged to prioritise intelligence gathering, personnel training and welfare.

He also warned officers and men of the command against misconduct and indiscipline.

According to him, disciplinary measures would be taken against any officer found wanting.

Dennis stressed that security remains a collective responsibility and called on residents to support ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity in the state.

He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and the NSCDC Commandant-General for the confidence reposed in him through his appointment.

Highlights of the ceremony included the signing of handover notes, symbolic transfer of authority through the NSCDC flag and a photo session attended by officers and guests.
