Osun ADC gov candidate decries rise in political violence

The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress in Osun State, Najeem Salaam, has condemned the rising cases of political violence and unrest in the state ahead of the August 15, 2026, governorship election.

Salaam, while addressing supporters during the ongoing ADC campaign tour in Ayedire and Olaoluwa Local Government Areas, described reports of violent attacks in Osogbo and Ede as disturbing, unfortunate and unacceptable.

He warned that the escalation of political tension could erode the peace and stability for which the state is known, stressing that the security of lives and property must remain paramount above every political ambition.

“No political ambition is worth the blood of any citizen, and no electoral victory should come at the expense of human lives,” Salaam was quoted as saying in a statement made available to Sunday PidomNigeria.

The ADC candidate called on politicians, party supporters and stakeholders across all divides to conduct themselves peacefully and uphold the values of love, unity and mutual respect as the election draws near.

“Historically, Osun State has been at the forefront of social progress and political excellence, championing the cherished Omoluabi ethos and promoting a society founded on decency, morality, and mutual respect. However, recent developments reveal a disturbing deviation from these noble values.

“In a state long regarded as one of the most peaceful in the country, we are beginning to witness troubling incidents of political unrest and violence. Today, some individuals are being mobilised as instruments of intimidation, victimisation, destruction, and chaos. We have witnessed attacks and counter-attacks in which several people have been brutalised, maimed, bullied, victimised, and, in some cases, killed. Properties worth millions of naira have also been destroyed, all in the name of political rivalry and vendetta.

“This is not the kind of politics we should promote, nor is it the kind of society we aspire to build. Politics should never be viewed as a do-or-die affair. If our collective objective is to serve the people and advance the development of our state, there can be no justification for violence, hatred, or the destruction of lives and property in the pursuit of electoral success,” he added.

He reminded citizens of their shared heritage, urging maturity in political engagements.

Salaam further maintained that political disagreements should never be resolved through violence, intimidation or thuggery.

The ADC flagbearer emphasised that every political actor, irrespective of party affiliation, deserves the right to campaign freely, associate lawfully and express legitimate views without fear of harassment or attack.

He called on security agencies to thoroughly investigate the recent incidents, apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

The ADC governorship candidate reaffirmed his commitment to issue-based campaigning and urged all political actors to prioritise the peace, stability and progress of the state above partisan interests.
