Oyebamiji sues for peace, condemns political violence across Osun

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Osun State, Bola Oyebamiji, has expressed concern over the recent wave of political violence reported in several parts of the state.

This is as he commiserated with citizens who have suffered injuries, losses and trauma.

Oyebamiji’s statement is coming after shootings were reported in some parts of Osun State on Tuesday.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Oyebamiji said his thoughts and prayers were with the victims, their families and loved ones, while wishing those injured a speedy recovery.

The APC candidate described the incidents as unfortunate and reiterated his commitment to democratic principles, stressing that elections should be decided through the ballot box rather than violence.

“Democracy is a contest of ideas, vision and service to the people. There is no political office, including the office of Governor, that is worth the blood of any human being.”

He stated that he was disturbed by reports of attacks on APC members and supporters in different parts of Osun State, alleging that party members had been targeted during political activities.

According to Oyebamiji, “APC supporters were attacked in Owode-Ede, while buses belonging to his campaign organisation were vandalised and damaged during the incident.”

He alleged that APC members participating in a peaceful Walk-to-Live rally in Ifeland were attacked by hoodlums said to be associated with the ruling government, resulting in injuries to several participants.

The APC governorship candidate also claimed that party supporters in Osogbo were subjected to physical assaults and that there were reports of individuals being shot at during the attacks. However, he noted that the full extent of injuries and any possible fatalities had not been independently verified.

Condemning political violence in all forms, Oyebamiji said intimidation, fear and lawlessness had no place in a democratic society and called for greater respect for democratic values.

He argued that the protection of lives and property remained the primary responsibility of government, adding that many residents of Osun State currently felt vulnerable amid what he described as a growing atmosphere of political intolerance and insecurity.

Looking ahead to the forthcoming governorship election, Oyebamiji pledged that security would be a priority if elected governor. 

“The safety and security of our people will be a top priority of my administration. Citizens should be able to exercise their democratic rights without fear.”

He urged residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding despite any provocation, expressing confidence that a new administration would emerge after the election. 

Oyebamiji said his proposed government would prioritise welfare, security, prosperity and peace while strengthening democratic institutions across the state.
