Police foil cattle rustling attempt in Bauchi, recover six cows

Operatives of the Bauchi State Police Command have foiled an alleged cattle rustling operation and recovered six cows in the Bakal area of Bauchi metropolis.

The command said the recovery followed credible intelligence received on June 23, 2026, indicating that suspected cattle rustlers were moving the animals towards a riverbank through the Goskaram axis of the city.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the command’s spokesman, SP Nafiu Habib, the information was received through the ‘A’ Division Police Headquarters, Township, Bauchi.

Acting on the tip-off, police operatives, in collaboration with local vigilantes and led by the Divisional Police Officer of ‘A’ Division, mobilised to the area and pursued the suspects.

The statement said the team intercepted the rustlers and recovered the six cows, while the suspects reportedly fled the scene.

“The livestock have been taken into police custody for identification and efforts are ongoing to trace their rightful owners,” the statement added.

The Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed a discreet investigation into the incident and ordered a manhunt for the fleeing suspects.

Aliyu commended the officers and vigilante members involved in the operation for their swift response and professionalism.

He also urged residents to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies with credible and timely information that could aid crime prevention and detection.

The police command reiterated its commitment to tackling cattle rustling and other forms of criminality across the state while ensuring the protection of lives and property.
