A truck transporting approximately 406 beehives has overturned in a Texas neighbourhood, releasing an estimated two million bees into the surrounding community and triggering a chaotic emergency response that required beekeepers in full protective suits to contain the situation.
Footage of the incident, captured by Christie Ray and distributed via Storyful, was broadcast by ABC7 and shows the scale of the swarm with the ground in the affected area blanketed entirely by bees in what witnesses described as an overwhelming and terrifying sight.
A second clip shows multiple beekeepers in white protective gear working alongside the overturned truck, attempting to gather and resecure the scattered hive boxes amid thick clouds of agitated bees still swarming the area.
The cause of the truck’s overturn was not immediately confirmed. Residents in the affected neighbourhood were urged to remain indoors and keep windows and doors sealed as emergency responders and bee specialists worked to manage the swarm.
Africanised honeybees, commonly known as killer bees, are prevalent in parts of Texas and are known to be significantly more aggressive than European honeybee species when disturbed, raising particular concern among authorities managing the scene.
No fatalities were immediately reported, though the risk of mass stinging incidents posed a serious threat to residents, pets, and emergency personnel in the vicinity.
