Theme park to close after 36 years in business – CEO says 'extremely difficult decision'

Fun Spot America in Atlanta, Georgia, first opened its gates as Dixieland Fun Park in 1990. The Orlando-based Fun Spot America Theme Parks group acquired the site in 2017 and it is set to welcome its last visitors on August 2.

The attraction boasts 14 major rides, including three high-speed roller coasters and a 40-foot go-kart track. It is also home to Georgia’s only legal bungee-jumping tower, alongside a selection of gentler rides suitable for families and younger children.

The owners have not disclosed the reasons behind the closure.

Without substantial fresh investment, ageing theme parks frequently become too costly to maintain or modernise, according to The Street.

The park’s owners have confirmed they will personally contact any customers who have booked school or group visits beyond that date. Any gift cards or season passes previously purchased by visitors will need to be redeemed before the closure.

The remaining two sites within the Fun Spot portfolio – located in Orlando and Kissimmee – will carry on trading as normal.

It has not been publicly revealed whether a new development will replace the current site.

The closure adds to a growing number of theme parks shutting down across the country.

“This was an extremely difficult decision,” CEO John Arie Jr. said in a press statement.

“Our Atlanta team has poured their hearts into serving our guests and creating a place where families could have fun together.

“We are deeply grateful for their dedication and for the support we have received from the Fayetteville community.”

Fun Spot America wrote on its Instagram page on June 25: “Come see us, make one more memory, and take one last ride.”
