Army Begins Probe Following Leaked DSS Warning of Boko Haram Attacks

The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into the leakage of a classified intelligence report issued by the Department of State Services (DSS), which warned of planned attacks by suspected Boko Haram insurgents and armed bandits in parts of Adamawa and Borno states.

The probe is focused on determining how the confidential security document, which was meant for internal use among security agencies, found its way into the public domain.

Politics Nigeria gathered that the intelligence report had been forwarded to military authorities as part of efforts to strengthen security measures in vulnerable communities following reports of renewed insurgent activities in the North-East.

Military sources disclosed that senior officers at the 232 Battalion in Yola, Adamawa State, have commenced an internal investigation to identify the individual responsible for circulating the sensitive document.

According to findings, the intelligence report was received through official channels and processed at the battalion before it was allegedly copied and shared outside authorised security circles.

A source familiar with the development said the document had already passed through the battalion’s registry before it was leaked.

“If you see the document, it was already punched in the registry of the 232 Battalion.

“It was after that an officer snapped it and sent it out to whoever he or she wanted for reasons best known to the person,” the source said.

The source expressed concern over the consequences of the leak, noting that the circulation of the document had created anxiety among residents in the affected areas.

“The sad aspect is that people are now panicking. That was why the DSS quietly alerted the 232 Battalion to be on the alert over the pending attacks, but unfortunately the document was leaked out,” the source added.

Another military officer confirmed that efforts were underway to uncover those behind the disclosure of the classified information.

According to the officer, the military views the incident as a serious breach capable of affecting ongoing security operations.

“There is nothing that can stop us from fishing out those behind the leaked document from the DSS.

“We must fish out the bad eggs among us. Nigeria’s national security cannot be compromised for personal selfish interest,” the officer stated.

The leaked intelligence report, dated July 27, 2026, was addressed to the Commander of the 23 Armoured Brigade in Yola.

The document reportedly contained security alerts concerning possible coordinated attacks by suspected Boko Haram fighters following the reported collapse of a ceasefire arrangement involving insurgent elements operating in parts of the North-East.

According to the intelligence report, the planned attacks were expected to target communities in Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State and Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

The report warned that insurgents were allegedly preparing operations aimed at kidnapping prominent individuals in the affected communities.

Among those listed as potential targets were government officials, councillors, district heads, religious leaders and residents.

The intelligence also indicated that the district head of Michika and his son were among individuals allegedly marked for abduction.

Security operatives were further informed that suspected insurgents had already deployed surveillance teams to monitor movements and activities within the affected communities ahead of the planned attacks.

The DSS reportedly advised military authorities to intensify surveillance and strengthen security presence across vulnerable locations.

The agency also recommended closer collaboration between the Nigerian Army, local hunters and forest guards as part of efforts to prevent any attack and improve intelligence gathering at the community level.

However, Army has yet to issue an official statement on the investigation as of the time of filing this report.
