Budget controversy raises fresh transparency concerns against Tinubu — Timi Frank

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Timi Frank, has alleged that the controversy surrounding the proposed 2026 Federal Budget has reinforced concerns over transparency, accountability and the management of public funds under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Mr Frank, in a statement issued on Wednesday, claimed that allegations of inflated budgetary allocations, fictitious projects and questionable expenditures had further weakened public confidence in the Federal Government.

He argued that recurring controversies over government spending had continued to raise questions about accountability, alleging that the administration had failed to effectively tackle corruption in public office.

“The recent revelations and controversy surrounding the 2026 Federal Budget have reinforced concerns about transparency, accountability and the stewardship of public resources,” he said.

Mr Frank alleged that repeated claims of financial misconduct and questionable governance had continued to affect public perception of the administration, adding that Nigerians were increasingly demanding greater accountability from public officials.

He also accused the Federal Government of failing to ensure that officials accused of corruption were held accountable, alleging that such actions had encouraged misuse of public resources.

The former APC spokesman further criticised the 10th National Assembly, accusing it of not providing sufficient oversight of the Executive arm of government.

He specifically faulted the leadership of the Senate, alleging that the legislature had failed to function as an independent institution capable of holding the Executive accountable.

According to him, such perceptions could weaken democratic institutions and undermine constitutional governance.

Mr Frank also urged international development partners to strengthen transparency and accountability mechanisms in any future financial assistance to Nigeria.

He welcomed ongoing discussions in the United States Congress on reviewing assistance to Nigeria, saying any future loans, grants or development support should be accompanied by stricter monitoring to ensure the resources directly benefit Nigerians.

Mr Frank, however, called on Nigerians to remain peaceful while continuing to demand accountability from public office holders.

He said citizens should continue to defend democratic institutions and exercise their constitutional right to elect leaders committed to integrity, competence and responsible governance.

The Federal Government had yet to respond to Frank’s allegations as of the time of filing this report.
