IGP Disu Decorates Agbonika as AIG

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has decorated the former Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, with his new rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG.
Agbonika was decorated on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Louis Edet House, Abuja, following his promotion to the senior rank.
His elevation makes him the second serving Commissioner of Police in Edo State to be promoted to AIG in recent times, after CP Abutu Yaro, who was elevated to the rank on September 30, 2022.
Yaro, the 44th Commissioner of Police in Edo, was subsequently redeployed to Zone 13 Headquarters, Ukpo, Anambra State, as AIG, while CP Mohammed Adamu Dankwara took over as his successor.
The Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, in a statement, described Agbonika’s elevation as a well-deserved recognition of his exemplary service, professionalism and contributions to policing in Nigeria.
Agbonika assumed duty as the 50th Commissioner of Police in Edo on April 8, 2025, following the deployment of CP Betty Enekpen-Otimenyin, the first female police officer to lead the Command.
The statement stated that Agbonika led the Command through an intensified campaign against kidnapping, cultism and other violent crimes.
Under his leadership, the Command recorded several operational breakthroughs while strengthening collaboration with the Nigerian Army, Edo State Security Corps, local hunters and other stakeholders.
The Command also credited him with championing intelligence-led policing, strategic operational redeployment and community engagement, which it said helped boost public confidence in the police.
His tenure further witnessed increased deployment of technology, including drones and aerial operations, in the fight against kidnappers and other criminal elements across the state.
It expressed confidence that Agbonika’s wealth of experience and leadership qualities would continue to strengthen the Nigeria Police Force and contribute to the nation’s internal security.
The Command congratulated the new AIG and wished him greater success, sound health and wisdom as he assumes higher responsibilities.
