Grammy-winning American musician Chris Brown entered a guilty plea on Friday to assault following a fight that hurt a music producer in a nightclub in London.
During a hearing at London’s Southwark Crown Court, Brown, 37, changed his plea. Regarding the 2023 altercation, he had already refuted more serious accusations.
In return for the guilty plea, prosecutors dropped charges of assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and having an offensive weapon.
Brown’s friend and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty to affray, with both men having been due to stand trial in October.
Brown had earlier denied att@cking Abraham Diaw with a bottle at the Tape nightclub in Mayfair in February 2023, but prosecutors said the incident was captured on surveillance footage in front of a club full of people.
Senior Crown Prosecution Service prosecutor Claire Campbell described the incident as a vicious and unprovoked att@ck carried out by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub, in which Brown used a glass bottle to strike the victim’s head twice.
She stressed that such violence is entirely unacceptable and that the CPS would continue working closely with police and other partners across the justice system to pursue similar cases and demonstrate that no one is above the law.
Brown had been free on bail of £5 million, which allowed him to tour Europe and North America last summer.
He was released on bail again on Friday and is due to be sentenced on October 26 on the affray charge, which carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison.
He was seen signing autographs for fans as he left the courthouse, dressed in a tan suit, gold-rimmed sunglasses and a St. Louis Cardinals baseball cap.
Brown, who rose to stardom as a teenager in 2005, won his first Grammy for best R&B album in 2011 for “F.A.M.E.”, and earned his second in the same category in 2025 for “11:11 (Deluxe)”.
