One dead, five others injured in Lagos-Ibadan expressway multiple crashes

Multiple accidents involving five articulated trucks and one Toyota Sienna vehicle on Kara Bridge in the early hours of Friday have left one person dead and others wounded.

Besides, many motorists and commuters were left stranded as a result of the accident.

Giving the details of the accident, the FRSC, Lagos Sector Command, said the first crash occurred at about 12:05am on the outbound carriageway towards Ibadan, involving five articulated trucks and one Toyota Sienna vehicle.

Sector Public Education Officer, Elizabeth Jayeola, said that preliminary investigation indicated that the crash resulted from speed violation and loss of control.

“A total of seven adult males were involved in the crash. One person lost his life and one sustained injuries, while five others escaped unhurt.”

She said that rescue and recovery operations were ongoing, and another crash occurred at about 3:15 am on the inbound carriageway towards Lagos involving a Mazda commercial bus.

“The lone crash was caused by brake failure, leaving the driver seriously injured,” she said, but noted that the
driver and other injured persons were rushed to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre for medical treatment.

Due to the crash, there is a significant logjam both inward and outward Lagos from the Kara Bridge.

The traffic extended from Kara Bridge to Ojota, Lagos, and to Arepo on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Passengers were stranded, while others embarked on an endurance trek from Arepo, Warewa, Opic to Lagos.

Other articulated vehicles, buses and cars remained at a spot, while commercial motorcycles seized the opportunity to make brisk business.

From Lagos to Mowe, commercial drivers were levying passengers 3,000 instead of N800. This left many stranded at the bus stops.
