Dead ISWAP cameraman exposes foreign links in Borno terror network

A Sony camcorder recovered from a dead ISWAP cameraman has reportedly uncovered fresh evidence of foreign involvement in the terrorist group’s operations in Borno State.

The device was retrieved by troops of the 19 Brigade, Sector 3 of Operation Hadin Kai, after they repelled an attempted ISWAP infiltration at Cross Kauwa in Kukawa Local Government Area.

The attack occurred around 10:20 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, when insurgents advanced towards military positions under the cover of darkness.

Troops, however, detected the movement early and responded with coordinated firepower, forcing the attackers to abandon their mission and retreat.

According to military sources, the insurgents were attempting to loot medical supplies intended for cholera treatment, lending credence to intelligence reports of a cholera outbreak within ISWAP camps. Some infected fighters were allegedly executed by the group.

During the exchange, an ISWAP cameraman was killed, and the recovered camcorder was found to contain operational footage and propaganda materials.

Preliminary forensic analysis of the recordings revealed that four senior ISWAP commanders coordinated the failed attack alongside three foreign operatives.

One of the identified foreigners, Abu Ishaq, is believed to be a Palestinian and the group’s chief trainer. Another, Abu Thaiba, reportedly a Moroccan medical doctor, is said to be providing medical support within the network. The identity of the third foreign operative remains unknown.

The military said the findings reinforce existing intelligence that ISWAP continues to receive training, medical expertise, and logistical support from international terrorist networks.

Following the clash, troops conducted a sweep of the area, recovering PKT ammunition, 7.62mm special rounds, terrorist uniforms, and other combat equipment.

Post-operation satellite imagery reportedly showed insurgents evacuating the bodies of fallen fighters, while human intelligence sources indicated that the group suffered significant casualties, with several others fleeing with gunshot wounds.

Two Nigerian soldiers sustained injuries during the firefight and were airlifted for advanced medical care. They are reported to be in stable condition.

Operation Hadin Kai described the foiled attack as a significant setback for ISWAP and reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining military pressure on terrorist elements across the North-East.
