Dutch referee Rob Dieperink has died at the age of 38, weeks after he was removed from FIFA’s list of World Cup officials following his arrest in the United Kingdom over allegations of s3xual assault.

The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirmed his death, saying it was “shocked” and deeply saddened by the news. No cause of death has been disclosed. Dieperink was arrested by the Metropolitan Police in April after officers responded to a report of an alleged sexual assault involving a teenage boy at an address in Croydon, London.

According to the Metropolitan Police, a man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of s3xual assault. However, following an investigation that included reviewing CCTV footage and examining digital devices, officers concluded that the available evidence did not meet the threshold for prosecution, and no further action was taken. Following the investigation, FIFA removed Dieperink from its roster of match officials for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Reacting after the decision, Dieperink maintained his innocence, saying he had been “wrongly accused” and had fully cooperated with the police investigation. He added that he immediately informed FIFA, UEFA and the KNVB about the matter and expressed disappointment at missing the tournament.

The alleged incident reportedly occurred while Dieperink was in London ahead of a UEFA Conference League fixture between Crystal Palace and Fiorentina. In a statement announcing his death, the KNVB described Dieperink as a respected international referee and a valued member of the officiating community.

“We are shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of referee Rob Dieperink. With Rob, the refereeing community loses a highly valued referee with international experience, but above all, a fine and dedicated colleague,” the association said. The KNVB extended its condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

Dieperink began his professional refereeing career in 2012 and became an Eredivisie referee in 2017. He also served as a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during the 2024 UEFA European Championship in Germany. His final officiating assignment was a friendly match between Go Ahead Eagles and Apollon FC last weekend.
