Family, friends honour late philanthropist Omikunle

Friends, family members and dignitaries on Saturday gathered in Igbajo, Osun State, to pay their last respects to the Loogun Losamu of Igbajoland, Chief Babatunde Omikunle, as he was laid to rest.

The funeral service held at First Baptist Church, Igbajo, drew attendees from across the country who came to honour the late community leader in appreciation of his life of service and philanthropy.

The deceased, who died on March 6, 2026, at the age of 71, was born on December 15, 1954, to the family of the late Baba Samuel Akintola Omikunle of Iloro Compound, Igbajo, and Mama Janet Mopelola Omikunle of Ile Jagun, Kosodo, Ojogbo, Ibadan.

Delivering a sermon titled “Don’t Take Life for Granted,” the President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, Rev. Israel Akanji, represented by the Director of Ecumenism and Interfaith, Dr Olusoji Onifade, said death remains inevitable for all.

Akanji described the late Omikunle as a great philanthropist and peacemaker who used the privileges of life well and left behind a legacy that would outlive him.

“Nobody wants to die, but death is a guarantee. There is nothing we can do to stop it. There is an expiration date for every individual.

“Late Chief Omikunle was a great man. He used the privilege he had very well, and what he did continues to live after his demise. He was a peacemaker, always willing to give a helping hand.

“I want to advise everyone gathered here today, don’t allow death to catch you unprepared. You have to prepare for death because everyone will die,” Akanji added.

The clergyman urged the congregation not to lose touch with God, noting that the most important thing in life is to maintain a relationship with the Almighty.

Addressing the children of the deceased, the cleric urged them to emulate their father’s generosity and remain steadfast in faith.

“Your father tried as a child of God. Please, don’t go far from God wherever you find yourself,” he said.

In a funeral oration, members of the Modern Igbajo Development League eulogised their late President as a courageous and firm leader who was cherished and honoured by the community.

“Mr President, why did you leave us so suddenly? However, we take solace in the fact that you didn’t die wretched or childless. We won’t forget you for your friendliness and firmness,” the group said.

Chief Omikunle is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren.
