Family Prepares Nike Sneaker Coffin For Son Who died Shortly After Returning From US

A coffin designed to resemble a Nike sneaker has been prepared for the burial of a Ghanaian returnee, popularly known as a “borga,” who reportedly died shortly after returning from abroad.

Video circulating online shows the elaborately crafted coffin, styled after a classic blue and white Nike sneaker complete with the brand’s signature swoosh, accompanied by the caption “Rest in peace Method.”

It is said that the deceased died Shortly after returning home from the US.

The coffin reflects Ghana’s long-established “fantasy coffin” tradition, most closely associated with the Ga people of Greater Accra, in which caskets are custom-designed to reflect the profession, interests, or personal identity of the deceased.

Sneaker-shaped coffins in particular date back to at least the 1990s, when master coffin artisan Paa Joe created designs for status-conscious clients, including one now held in the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Museum in New York.

The identity of the deceased, referred to in the video only as “Method,” the specific circumstances of his death, and the location of the funeral have not been independently verified.
