Flood Takes Over Delta Court, Homes and Businesses After Heavy Rain

Floods have swamped the Delta State High Court in Agbarho, a hamlet in Ughelli North Local Government Area.

Residents’ homes and commercial premises were also drowned, with multiple properties destroyed in several Agbarho sub clans, including the Orhokpokpor, Ehwere, Ughrwughelli, and Oviri settlements.

The flood followed an overnight downpour on Thursday which continued into Friday morning, July 31.

Drainages were overwhelmed by the heavy rain, disrupting economic activities and restricting movement across the town.

Residents woke up to find their homes flooded, with furniture, electrical appliances, food items, clothes and other valuables destroyed.

Shop owners were forced to suspend business activities as a result of the flooding, while motorists and pedestrians struggled to navigate submerged roads.

Residents have attributed the recurring flooding to the lack of proper drainage systems and blocked waterways, explaining that the absence of adequate drainage and the blockage of waterways have continued to worsen the impact of heavy rainfall in the area.

One resident lamented waking up to find their entire house flooded, noting that although belongings were hurriedly moved, many valuable items had already been destroyed, describing the situation as an annual nightmare requiring urgent action.

A trader whose shop was affected described the incident as a major setback, noting that several goods were destroyed by the flood, resulting in significant financial losses.
