Lagos Arrests 396 Beggars in Renewed Street Control Operation

The Lagos State Government has apprehended 396 beggars as part of a renewed crackdown on street begging, stating that those arrested will be profiled, provided with necessary assistance, and returned to their respective states.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources disclosed this in a statement shared on social media on Tuesday, noting that operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, popularly known as the KAI Corps, carried out the arrests as part of the state’s ongoing campaign to sanitise the environment and curb illegal activities.

According to the commissioner, a total of 396 beggars were apprehended by the corps as part of the government’s sustained efforts to keep the state clean and check illegal activities.

He explained that the arrested individuals would not only be profiled but would also receive appropriate support where necessary before being handed over to relevant authorities to facilitate their safe return to their home states.

The commissioner noted that the exercise forms part of the government’s broader efforts to improve public order and environmental sanitation across the state, describing the initiative as a reflection of the government’s commitment to maintaining public order, protecting the environment, and ensuring a cleaner, safer, and more secure Lagos for all residents.

Street begging remains prohibited under Lagos State law, and it is also considered an offence to give alms to beggars along major highways.

The state government has repeatedly urged residents to channel their donations through religious organisations and registered charity bodies instead of giving directly to beggars, warning that violating this directive constitutes an offence.
