Forest rescue officials later tranquilized the animal and safely removed it from the store, while Gurjar was treated for his injuries and is now recovering well.

Although Gurjar was left with wounds to his chest, face, and both shoulders, the store owner confirmed that he is recovering well. The dramatic rescue quickly captured attention online, with viewers expressing relief that the salesman survived the terrifying encounter.

The frightening liquor store attack comes as another leopard encounter in India ended in tragedy. According to The Indian Express, a five-year-old girl was killed after a leopard grabbed her while she slept beside her family near a cattle shed in Pune’s Shirur taluka. 

Her family and forest officials, police, and villagers searched for her. Still, the child was later located in a nearby sugarcane field and taken to a hospital where she was declared dead. Wards have since been put on heightened alert, and trap cameras and cages have been set up in the area.

The attack is the latest in a series of deadly human-leopard encounters in the region, highlighting the growing challenges as wildlife and expanding communities continue to overlap.

The scary liquor store incident is not the first in which a leopard has invaded human habitation. Two men were attacked by a leopard at South Africa’s Hoedspruit Air Force Base, an area on the edge of the famous Kruger National Park, in July 2024.

One of the victims, an air force member, was out on a morning run when the leopard attacked, while a civilian employee was injured during a separate encounter while walking around the base.

Both men suffered scratches and were hospitalized before later recovering from their injuries. The leopard was eventually captured and relocated to a wildlife sanctuary about 100 kilometers away, the BBC reported.

Wildlife officials said that it is not unusual to see leopards around the area because they are agile; they can easily cross over the boundary of the park even with the existing fences. The South African incident was no India horror tale, though, and both men survived an attack on a liquor store.
