The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has demanded a swift and open investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK, in Awka, Anambra State. Reader discretion is advised.
The call came in a statement from the association’s National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, following reports that the lecturer fled the scene after allegedly being caught in a compromising position with a female student.
The statement claimed he escaped through a window while partially dressed upon realising he had been discovered.
NANS stated that, if the allegation is confirmed, it would represent a grave violation of professional conduct and a betrayal of the trust placed in academic staff.
The body also praised students who reportedly petitioned the institution’s Vice-Chancellor over the matter, affirming its backing for the female student involved and others pushing for accountability.
The association stressed that it would not tolerate harassment, abuse of power, or sexual misconduct on campuses, insisting that schools must remain safe learning environments rather than spaces where students can be preyed upon.
NANS called on the university’s management to launch an immediate and transparent probe into the incident, and to impose appropriate sanctions on the lecturer should he be found guilty.
It further demanded that the female student and any other whistleblowers be shielded from intimidation, victimisation, or reprisals, emphasizing that any process undertaken must prioritise students’ welfare, dignity, and safety.
The body also urged UNIZIK to reinforce its disciplinary procedures and reporting systems for handling cases of sexual harassment and other misconduct going forward.
Akinteye added that the association would not stay quiet while female students are violated and campuses become places of fear, insisting that justice must be served and that silence amounts to complicity.
