Nigerian woman advises women against dating or marrying poor men

A Nigerian woman, Abuka Ojochide, has advised women against dating or marrying poor men.
Ojochide doubled down on her apologetic stance in a Facebook post on Monday, July 13, 2026 despite her previous advice sparking backlash, with critics saying that wealth is not gender specific.
While noting that the critics made salient points, she argued that a woman without money would still maintain the household, provide food and ensure the children are well taken care unlike a man without money, who would rather sit idle all day blaming the government for being poor.
“The other day, I advised women against marrying poor men and men came for me, which is understandable,” she wrote.
“These men raised salient points like, “wealth is not gender specific”, “we have more poor women than men”, etc.
“One thing these men and women alike have failed to understand is that a woman is never poor.
“From the day a woman is born, she is rich.
“A man without money is a poor man. A woman without money isn’t a poor woman. Clock that!
“Look around you, see how men without money behave and compare it to how women without money behave.
“A woman without money would still ensure the house is clean, there is food to eat, the children are well taken care of.
“But you see a man without money, he would sit all day blaming the government for being poor and makes no effort in leaving his current situation.
“Dear Woman, Do not marry a poor man. Do not date them.”
