NMA issues five-day ultimatum to Akwa Ibom hospital over staff salary

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Akwa Ibom State Branch, has issued a five-day ultimatum to the management of St. Luke’s Hospital, Anua to increase the salary of its staff or risk indefinite strike.
This was part of the resolutions reached at the end of an Emergency General Meeting (EGM) of the association held on Friday, July 10, 2026.
In a communique endorsed by the Chairman and the Secretary of the branch, Prof. Aniekan Imo Peter and Dr. Ighorodje Edesiri and issued to Newsmen in Uyo on Saturday, the union decried poor remuneration of staff and remittance of dues by the facility.
It, therefore, demanded an open discussion from the Hospital on the matter so as to be at par wit COMMESS.
The communique in parts, “After extensive deliberations, the Congress resolved as follows: Congress mandated a five day ultimatum to the management of St. Luke’s Hospital, Anua and open discussions concerning upward review of staff salaries at par at COMMESS and develop conditions of service of staff under the hospital employ.
“Congress mandates that if no reasonable compromise at end of the ultimatum, the state branch shall issue a warning strike, and possibly an indefinite strike.”
The chairman thanked the Congress for the mandate to proceed on the necessary steps to ensure members have a living wage.
