Osun closes newly unveiled flyover over structural defect

The Osun State Government has temporarily shut the newly commissioned Lameco Flyover in Osogbo after a structural defect was discovered on the bridge, less than a month after it was opened to traffic.

One lane of the flyover was cordoned off on Friday during a visit by The PidomNigeria, while videos circulating on social media showed visible cracks on a section of the bridge.

The development has triggered a political row, with the Accord Party alleging sabotage and the All Progressives Congress questioning the quality of the project.

Reacting, the Osun State Chairman of the Accord Party, Victor Akande, claimed the party had received reports of what it described as a “disturbing pattern of vandalisation targeting public infrastructure delivered by the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke.”

Akande alleged that the incidents appeared to be “part of a calculated attempt by desperate elements in the opposition APC to undermine and discredit the remarkable achievements of the current administration ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.”

He urged security agencies to investigate the matter and prosecute anyone found culpable, irrespective of political affiliation.

“We hereby urge residents, community leaders, youth groups, and all well-meaning citizens to remain vigilant and take ownership of public assets by promptly reporting any suspicious activities around government projects to the appropriate security agencies.

“The people of Osun have witnessed unprecedented infrastructural development under Governor Ademola Adeleke, and no amount of politically motivated vandalism will erase these visible achievements or derail the administration’s commitment to building a more prosperous and secure state for all,” Akande said.

However, the Osun APC Governorship Campaign Council, dismissed the sabotage claim, insisting that preliminary findings pointed to structural deficiencies in the project.

In a statement signed by its Media and Publicity Director, Remi Omowaiye, the council said there were confirmed reports of “visible signs of structural failure” on the flyover.

“That include a deep pothole and other distress points that raise serious questions about the quality of construction and the integrity of the entire project. These disturbing developments, coming barely a month after the commissioning, are unacceptable and constitute a direct threat to the lives of innocent road users,” the statement read.

The APC further argued that the incident justified the decision of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, to decline the invitation to commission the project.

“This unfortunate development has vindicated the decision of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, a distinguished engineer, to distance himself from the commissioning ceremony despite being invited by the Ademola Adeleke administration. The revered monarch neither attended the event nor sent a representative,” Omowaiye added.

The council called on Governor Adeleke to immediately close the bridge and commission an independent structural integrity assessment by qualified professionals.

It also advised motorists to avoid using the flyover until experts certify it safe for use.

Recall that Adeleke commissioned the Lameco Flyover in Osogbo on July 1, 2026, describing it as one of his administration’s landmark infrastructure projects.

At the inauguration, he said his government had completed more than 300 kilometres of intra-city roads across Osun State, assuring residents that the flyover and other projects were executed with due process, transparency and without compromising the state’s financial future.
