Three Defendants Plead Guilty to Terrorism Charges Over Oriire School Abduction

Three defendants standing trial over the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have pleaded guilty to multiple terrorism‑related offences before the Federal High Court, Abuja.
The defendants — Abdulrazak Umar (a.k.a. Abu Khalifa/Abu Khalid), Yunusa Musa (a.k.a. Yunusa bin Musa), and Shamsu Adamu Sani (a.k.a. Abu Itisar) — appeared before Justice Salem Ibrahim and admitted to charges brought by the Federal Government.
The case arises from the May 2026 abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire, an incident that generated nationwide outrage and renewed calls for enhanced school security.
During the court proceedings, the defendants confessed to withholding information about alleged masterminds of the kidnapping. They admitted membership of Darul Salam, described by prosecutors as an affiliate of Ansaru, a proscribed terrorist organisation in Nigeria.
Umar and Sani acknowledged providing training, issuing instructions, and inciting members via a WhatsApp group titled “The Oneness of Allah is the Foundation of Peace”, which prosecutors said was used to disseminate extremist ideology.
Umar separately pleaded guilty to illegal gold mining in Suleja, Niger State, without lawful authorisation.
The Federal Government filed a 10‑count charge on 17 July 2027, covering terrorism, kidnapping, concealment of information, incitement, membership of a banned terrorist organisation, and illegal mining.
According to the charge sheet, the defendants conspired with others — Muhammad Sani, Jibril Mohammed, and Ibrahim Khabab — between January and May 2026 to execute the Oriire abduction. The prosecution cited Section 26(1) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, which criminalises conspiracy to commit acts of terrorism.
The Oriire school abduction remains one of Nigeria’s high‑profile kidnapping cases, drawing widespread condemnation and intensifying demands for stronger protective measures for educational institutions.
