Trump begs E. Jean Carroll to return her $5.8 million payday

President Donald Trump launched urgent legal action to recover the $5.8 million in defamation judgment writer E. Jean Carroll won against him.

Trump argued her decision to invest the funds in a retirement account rather than keep them in a court-controlled account makes the money “irretrievable.”

A 2023 jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll in a 1996 department store dressing room and defaming her publicly, according to PBS.

The Supreme Court declined Trump’s appeal on June 29, and Carroll collected the full $5.8 million by July 14, according to court records, PBS reported.

“Defendant has lost before a jury, the district court, a unanimous Second Circuit panel, the full Second Circuit, en banc, and the Supreme Court of the United States,” Carroll’s lawyers wrote.

Trump’s lawyers characterized Carroll’s investment decision as a “bait-and-switch,” claiming she misled the court by promising to place funds in a secure account before moving them to stock market investments.

“President Trump faces irreparable harm,” his lawyers added.

Carroll’s attorneys countered, arguing Trump’s request is “procedurally improper” and represents his seventh appeal in two related cases.

They also noted Judge Lewis Kaplan previously stated Trump “has been stalling this case for years.”
