Abuja woman faces backlash after seeking N1m for private school fees months after Nigerians donated money to her

An Abuja resident, Motunrayo, has sparked public debate after launching an online appeal for over N1 million to fund her child’s private school tuition and cover house rent. The appeal comes less than a year after a humanitarian, Joy Carl, and members of the public intervened to rescue her from homelessness and financial distress.

The narrative began in August 2025 when Carl encountered a heavily pregnant and frail Motunrayo on the streets of Abuja. Upon inquiry, Motunrayo revealed she had been turned away from a healthcare facility because she could not afford a N28,000 medical bill.

Carl intervened by providing financial assistance, purchasing infant supplies, and registering her at an alternative hospital. Unfortunately, Motunrayo subsequently lost the pregnancy. Following the incident, Carl coordinated a public crowdfunding campaign, which successfully secured a new apartment for Motunrayo’s family and established an online clothing business to provide them with a sustainable income.

However, Motunrayo recently returned to social media to solicit public donations, stating she requires over N1 million for rent renewal and private school fees. Defending her choice of schooling, she argued that proximity issues prevented her from enrolling her child in a more affordable public school.

Responding to criticism regarding the appeal, Motunrayo clarified that the fundraiser is entirely voluntary, stating she is not compelling anyone to donate to her cause.
