ASUU threatens shutdown of Kebbi varsity over unresolved demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology, Aliero, AFUSTA, has issued a two-week ultimatum to Kebbi Government to address its demands or face an indefinite strike.

This was contained in a statement on Sunday jointly signed by Dr Isah Musa-Fakai and Dr Gado Abubakar, the Chairman and Secretary of the union respectively.

The union said the ultimatum is a reminder to stakeholders and all concerned authorities to do the needful regarding the lingering demands.

It added that the government’s failure to address the issues affecting the university would compel the union to down tools.

According to the statement, the union will proceed on a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike until all outstanding issues are completely resolved.

“This press release is to inform the university community, the people of Kebbi, and the general public about the position of our union regarding the persistent non-implementation of the FGN/ASUU 2025 Agreement.

“The agreement became effective on January 1, 2026, as well as other lingering welfare issues affecting members of our branch,” the statement added.

The union explained that following an interaction between the ASUU-AFUSTA branch congress and the ASUU National Visitation Team on July 30, the congress carefully reviewed the current situation in the university.

“After extensive deliberations, it became evident that in spite of previous communications and engagements with the appropriate authorities, the issues that gave rise to our concerns remain unresolved.

“Consequently, the congress unanimously resolved to issue a two-week ultimatum, effective from July 31 to August 13, to the Governing Council and the University Management to fully implement the FGN/ASUU 2025 Agreement and address all outstanding welfare issues affecting our members.”

The union said that the decision should not be taken lightly by the authorities, stressing that industrial action was always the last resort after dialogue and constructive engagement had failed.

However, it reaffirmed its commitment to constructive dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes, and urged the authorities to act within the stipulated period to prevent disruption of the academic calendar.
