Ex Opposition Chairman Fires Warning at Ruling Party Governors

A former chairman of Nigeria’s main opposition party has attacked governors from the ruling political party, calling them “tenants” in government houses.

Alhaji Kawu Baraje said the ruling party has lost the trust of Nigerians and will struggle in elections planned for 2027.

He made the comments while traveling through an airport on his way to Bauchi State.

Baraje argued that the opposition party, which he formerly led, has solved its internal problems and is now in a better position to win back states currently controlled by the ruling party.

He said the ruling party’s earlier election victories were mainly possible because the opposition was divided against itself.

He claimed that the governors from the ruling party are merely temporary occupants of government houses, not rightful leaders.

Baraje noted that the opposition party accepted the results of elections in 2015 and 2023 to keep peace, even though they had concerns about how those elections were conducted.

He said people are now rejecting the current government completely and calling for the opposition to return to power.

The former party chairman expressed belief that the opposition’s unity and efforts to heal internal wounds would help it win in 2027.

He predicted that his party would take back several states currently governed by the ruling party, particularly mentioning Bauchi and Jigawa.

His comments reflect the increased political activity happening as major parties prepare for the 2027 general elections, with opposition groups trying to regain control of states currently run by the ruling party.
