It’s Not Right To Seek Traditional Marriage Lists As A Christian — Rev. John Wesley Amenuku Agble

Published

on

Rev. John Wesley Amenuku Agble, founder of the Apostolic Recovery Movement, has criticised the practice of Christian families requesting traditional dowry items before marriages, describing it as hypocritical and not rooted in Christianity.

“You’re born into and dedicated to the church as a Christian, yet you go back to your village to collect your marriage list from an Abusuapanyin who has never set foot in a church? Stop that hypocrisy,” he said.

His comments challenge a widely practised tradition in Ghana, where family heads, often referred to as Abusuapanyin, oversee the compilation of marriage lists and traditional dowry requirements, even within Christian households.

The remarks add to Amenuku Agble’s growing reputation as a pastor unafraid to challenge conventional religious and cultural practices, having previously taken public stances on issues ranging from prayer culture to church structure.

His comments have since sparked discussion online, with reactions divided between those who agree that certain traditional marriage customs conflict with Christian teaching, and others who defend such practices as important cultural heritage that can coexist with faith.
