Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has been taken to court over an unpaid tax bill.
The UK tax authority filed a bankruptcy petition against the 48-year-old this week, asking him to repay money he owes.
A bankruptcy petition is a formal court request for repayment of outstanding debt.
The tax authority said it only takes this step when all other efforts to collect have failed.
They try to work with people who owe taxes by offering payment plans, but Carragher’s case reached the point where they had to go to court.
Sources suggest the matter will be resolved quickly and Carragher is working to settle the issue.
Carragher played for Liverpool for seventeen years after coming through their academy, making 737 appearances.
He won major titles including the Champions League in 2005 and the UEFA Cup in 2001.
He retired from playing in 2013 and moved into television, becoming a well-known Premier League pundit.
He currently works for Sky Sports and appears on several football podcasts. He also commentates for American television.
