Kano govt completes 867 projects – Commissioner

The Kano State Government says it has completed 867 out of 1,557 projects being executed across the state within the three years of Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration.

The Commissioner for Public Procurement, Projects Monitoring and Evaluation, Nura Maaji, disclosed this at a press conference in Kano on Sunday.

According to Mr Maaji, the 867 completed projects represent 55.68 per cent of the total projects, while 654 projects, representing 42 per cent, are ongoing.

He added that 26 projects, representing 1.66 per cent, are at the award stage, while 10 others, representing 0.64 per cent, are planned and ready for award.

The commissioner said the projects have a cumulative contract value of N996.29 billion, while N695.20 billion has been approved through No Objection Certificates, NOCs, with payment certificates worth N444.75 billion vetted by the ministry.

He said the figures demonstrated the scale of the current administration’s capital investment programme and the level of financial oversight being applied to projects under the ministry’s monitoring mandate.

Mr Maaji said the projects were distributed across Kano’s 44 Local Government Areas, with 598 projects valued at approximately N299.36 billion located in the eight metropolitan LGAs.

The 36 rural LGAs, he said, account for 653 projects valued at about N287.90 billion.

He added that cross-cutting projects covering multiple LGAs were valued at approximately N159.50 billion, while statewide and other projects accounted for about N249.54 billion.

“Depending on the government’s distribution of projects, the figures demonstrate that rural development remains a major component of the administration’s investment programme.

“This shows that the government’s development agenda extends beyond the metropolitan area to include rural roads, healthcare facilities, schools, housing, feeder roads and other essential infrastructure,” he said.

Highlighting some of the major projects captured in the government’s portfolio, the commissioner mentioned the mass housing scheme at Rijiyar Gwangwan in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area, awarded at approximately N113.19 billion.

Other major projects, according to him, include the N24.77 billion Katsina Road expansion, the N21.90 billion Modern Cities infrastructure programme, the N27.74 billion Madobi–Yako–Kafin Maiyaki/Kiru Road intervention, and the N22 billion Rural Model City Project covering the 36 rural LGAs.

On financial oversight, Mr Maaji said the payment figure represented payment certificates duly vetted by the ministry, noting that the portfolio included ongoing, recently awarded and planned projects.

He assured that the government would continue to monitor project implementation, address bottlenecks and ensure that public resources were deployed responsibly.

“The government remains committed to ensuring that these investments translate into measurable improvements in the lives of the teeming citizens and residents alike.

“Let me use this opportunity to reaffirm our ministry’s commitment to transparency and accountability. At this ministry, we will continue to ensure that projects are monitored from procurement through implementation to completion and that payment certification is linked to verified project execution.

“Data show that Kano State is undertaking a large-scale development programme, with significant progress already recorded, substantial projects still under implementation, and a continuing requirement for rigorous monitoring, financial discipline and timely project completion,” he said.
