Kano supermarket hands over N28m worth of expired goods for destruction

SUFAYE Investment Ltd. has handed over defective goods worth approximately N28 million to the Kano State Consumer Protection Council, KCPC, for proper disposal.

The goods, according to a statement by the KCPC Director of Public Enlightenment, Jamilu Mustapha Yakasai, were either damaged or expired.

Mr Yakasai said the handover was part of the company’s efforts to support the fight against adulterated, damaged and expired products in markets across the state.

Receiving the items, the Executive Secretary of the KCPC, Dr Ibrahim Muhammad, described the gesture as a significant step towards supporting the council’s efforts to prevent damaged and expired products from reaching consumers.

Mr Muhammad, according to Mr Yakasai, called on other companies and business owners across the state to emulate SUFAYE by withdrawing adulterated, damaged and expired products from circulation instead of selling them to the public.

He disclosed that the council had, within the last four months, received products worth millions of naira, which are currently awaiting the approval of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for their lawful destruction through burning.

The executive secretary also expressed appreciation to the people of Kano State, as well as companies and business owners, for their cooperation and support towards the council’s efforts to protect consumers and ensure the quality and safety of products available in the markets.

Earlier, the Manager of SUFAYE Investment, Alhaji Jabir, said the initiative was part of the company’s efforts to inspect and assess its products and remove defective ones from circulation.

Mr Jabir said the exercise was in compliance with regulatory requirements and aimed at maintaining proper business practices.

He commended the KCPC for its continuous monitoring and supervision of products in the market, noting that such efforts would contribute significantly to protecting public health.

Mr Jabir further assured that the company would continue to produce quality products, particularly its beverages, while contributing to the economic development of Kano State.
