A Nigerian man has shared how a mistaken money transfer took an unexpected turn after he sent ₦70,000 to the wrong Opay account.

According to a post on social media, the man, identified as @Dr-Pharouk, said the receiver of the wrongly sent funds informed him that he would return ₦50,000 while keeping ₦20,000 as a reward for his honesty.

However, things took a twist when the same receiver mistakenly transferred ₦700,000 to the man’s account instead of the agreed ₦50,000. Since then, the man said the receiver has been calling him repeatedly, pleading for the full amount to be returned, explaining that the money belonged to his boss.

In his post, he narrated that after accidentally sending ₦70,000 to a wrong Opay account, the owner offered to keep ₦20,000 for his honesty and refund ₦50,000, an offer he agreed to only for the person to mistakenly send him ₦700,000 instead.

He said the man had since been calling and begging him to return the full amount, and asked social media users what he should do.

The post has since generated reactions from social media users. Some commenters jokingly suggested he apply the same “honesty fee” logic to the larger sum, proposing he keep ₦200,000 and return ₦500,000, with a few adding that such a gesture might even prompt the sender to “reward” him further next time.

Others humorously noted that the man had been shortchanged by ₦200,000 in the first exchange, joking that it was perhaps a price worth paying for the engagement the story generated online.

Another commenter suggested he test the receiver’s reaction by proposing the same 200k/500k split on the new amount, describing it as potentially a fair deal if accepted.
