One of the most unusual divorce disputes involved Dr Richard Batista, who donated a kidney to his wife during their marriage.
The kidney transplant reportedly saved her life.
Years later, their marriage ended, and Batista made an unexpected demand during the divorce proceedings.
He asked his former wife to return the donated kidney or pay him compensation for it. He reportedly valued the organ at around $1.5 million.
The unusual request attracted widespread attention and started a debate about marriage, divorce and organ donation.
However, the court rejected Batista’s demand.
The court ruled that a donated organ is a gift. Once donated, it cannot be taken back or given a financial value during a divorce settlement.
The case remains one of the most widely discussed legal disputes involving marriage and a life-saving organ donation.
