Osun Election: Our Democracy Is Undoubtedly Developing – Idaomi

Published

on

The Osun governorship election has come and gone but the fallout of the exercise is still being discussed in the political space. The Osun election has shown that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a Democrat and our democracy is undoubtedly developing.

Commenting on the outcome of the election, a political commentator, analyst and activist Prince Oluwatobi Idaomi said President Tinubu has consistently maintained that every vote must count, and the outcome of the election demonstrates that commitment.

How will you describe the outcome of the Osun governorship election?

The Osun election is a reflection of the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to good governance and democratic principles.

Before the election, the opposition and some sections of the media raised concerns that the Federal Government might deploy its influence to manipulate the process. However, President Tinubu has consistently maintained that every vote must count, and the outcome of the election demonstrates that commitment. That reminds me about the architect of one man, one vote. It was our comrade governor then that launched that program of one man, one vote. IBB was at the Ogbe stadium then. I still recollect vividly how Mr Keyamo schooled IBB about democracy

Does the results show INEC has gotten it right this time?

INEC should also be commended where it deserves recognition. Unlike the days when ballot boxes were snatched and electoral processes were disrupted. But in this election, accreditation and voting commenced early and proceeded smoothly across Osun State. The results were also transmitted to the IReV portal in a timely manner. These are positive developments that deserve acknowledgment.

Is Our Democracy Truly Developing?

Yes, our democracy is undoubtedly developing. The President deserves commendation for allowing the electoral process to take its course without interference. The security agencies deployed for the election maintained law and order and provided an environment where citizens could exercise their franchise peacefully.

Does the Opposition’s Victory in Osun Portray President Tinubu as a True Democrat?

Absolutely. The fact that the opposition party won the Osun governorship election is, in itself, evidence that President Tinubu is committed to democratic values. This administration has consistently expressed its desire to leave behind a legacy in which the people’s choices are respected.

Those who predicted that the Federal Government would manipulate the election have been proved wrong. The election was conducted in a manner that allowed voters to freely express their preferences, and the results reflected the choices made at the polls.

I would also like to address those opposition figures who have repeatedly claimed that incumbent governors cannot win elections and that elections would be contested between the APC and the people. The Osun election has shown otherwise. The governor was able to connect with his people, present his message to them, and ultimately secure their support.

In Edo State, we are equally prepared to support the leadership of Governor Okpebholo. Where he provides direction in the interest of the people, we are ready to follow. The people of Edo State have great confidence in him, and when it comes to our political direction, it is Asiwaju all the way.
