Four confirmed dead, three rescued in Kwara building collapse

Four people have been confirmed dead, while four others have been rescued alive following the collapse of a multi-storey residential building in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

The disaster occurred in the early hours of Tuesday at No. 41 Popo Giwa Street, beside the Gogoro Mosque in the Ilorin West Local Government Area.

The structure collapsed between 5:00 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. while occupants were asleep.

Earlier reports indicated that eight people—including a family consisting of a serving soldier, his wife, and children—were trapped beneath the rubble.

Emergency responders have confirmed that four victims died while four survivors were pulled out alive and rushed to the hospital for medical treatment

Spokesperson of Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday.

Adekunle said rescue teams had recovered four bodies from the rubble and rescued four survivors.

“Based on the situation report, now we’ve recovered four people dead and rescued four people alive”. Adekunle said.

He added that rescue efforts were still ongoing and that more details would be released as operations progressed.

Authorities have yet to determine the exact number of occupants inside the building at the time of the collapse, while the cause of the incident remains unknown.
