Julian Alvarez rejects Arsenal advances, chooses to stay at Atletico Madrid

Julian Alvarez has decided to remain at Atletico Madrid until at least the January transfer window, bringing an end to the summer transfer saga surrounding the Argentine forward.

Alvarez has informed Atletico’s director of football, Mateu Alemany, that he will not leave the club this summer despite persistent interest from Arsenal and his reported desire to join Barcelona.

According to reports from La Sexta and La Pizarra de Quintana, via SPORT, the decision means the 26-year-old will continue his career at the Metropolitano under Diego Simeone for now.

The development comes after several months of speculation over Alvarez’s future, with Arsenal strongly linked with a move for the former Manchester City forward.

The Gunners reportedly submitted offers to tempt Alvarez back to the Premier League, but the Argentine has opted to reject the advances.

Alvarez has remained interested in a future move to Barcelona and had made his desire to join the Catalan club clear earlier this summer.

“The best thing for everyone is a transfer; I want to fulfill my dream,” Alvarez said during the 2026 World Cup.

Atletico, however, maintained a firm position over the possibility of Alvarez joining Barcelona, with the club’s social media accounts even mocking the reported interest by jokingly suggesting they could sign Lamine Yamal, Pedri or Raphinha.

Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin also made the club’s position clear, insisting that the forward remains an important part of their plans.

“Our intention, and my personal dream, is for him to stay with us, to stay at Atletico,” Marín stated.

“To compete among the greats, you need great players, and Julian is one of them.”

Marín also ruled out the possibility of Alvarez joining Atletico’s La Liga rivals.

“If he believes it’s incompatible to be at Atletico Madrid, we’ll look for an alternative, but it will never, ever be Barcelona,” he added.

The summer saga has now ended with neither Atletico nor Alvarez getting their preferred outcome.

Atletico’s hierarchy had attempted to find a Premier League solution for the forward, while Alvarez resisted a move to England despite the club’s stance against a transfer to Barcelona.

The Argentine will now remain in the Spanish capital and continue with Atletico until at least the winter transfer window, when his future could become a talking point again.
