2027: Aisha Yesufu pulls out of FCT Senate race

Socio-political activist Aisha Yesufu has officially withdrawn from the 2027 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial race.

The exit of the socio-political activist followed a structural decision by her political party, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The NDC leadership decided not to conduct primary elections for the FCT Senate position, effectively closing the window for her candidacy.

The party chose to focus its local legislative primary efforts strictly on the House of Representatives instead. Yesufu confirmed the development in a statement issued on Friday, effectively ending her ambition to contest for the seat in the 2027 general election.

“Our party has decided not to conduct primaries for the Senatorial seat in FCT Abuja. “It however intends to conduct primaries for House of Representatives! Go ahead and make your choice known!” she said.

Yesufu urged her supporters to remain calm and maintain focus on the broader political objective ahead of the 2027 elections. “I urge each and everyone of you to remain calm and focus on the bigger picture which is the presidential election.

Nigeria will be OK!” she said, while appreciating supporters of the #AishaForSenate project for their commitment and dedication. The activist also pledged to continue engaging residents across the FCT, saying she would return to all six area councils in the coming week to appreciate residents for their support and continue advocating for a better capital city.

“In the coming week I will be returning back to all the 6 Area Councils God willing to appreciate them for the warm welcome and continue to forge ahead for a #BetterFCT,” she added.

Yesufu had declared interest in the 2027 FCT senatorial race on May 6 after joining the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying her decision was influenced by the leadership experience she gained in the party.

Her withdrawal comes amid recent speculation that the party had ceded the FCT senate ticket to Amanda Pam, an aspirant who had been in the party before Yesufu’s defection. However, the NDC has yet to officially comment on the claims.
